A Breaking Bad Tour of Albuquerque

In this day and age, preparing for a special occasion can include coming up with a hash tag to use on social media. Not only does this hash tag provide a “brand” for the event, but it helps keep track of all of the Instagrams and Tweets the people in your party post to the web! I was very excited to come up with a hash tag for our winter vacation (it’s the little things in life, isn’t it?). We decided on #pritchettsbreakbad because it defined our final destination of ABQ. But I think it also of mirrors the spontaneity of the entire trip, which we are not necessarily known for! 🙂

We flew into Las Vegas Christmas night and over the course of a few days made appearances at the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, and among the red rocks of Sedona before ending up in Albuquerque for a self-guided tour of Breaking Bad filming locations. You may call us crazy/obsessive fans, and I may agree with you but ABQ is the Hollywood of critically-acclaimed, Emmy award winning television!

Before leaving for our vacation, I created a Google Custom Map with all of the locations we wanted to check out. Making a custom map is really easy and fun! I made one previously for Historic Raleigh Sites. Since many people have already done the Breaking Bad “tour”, there was a lot of info out there to help us research exact addresses. The Breaking Bad Wiki was also very helpful! Here’s our final map (I hope to improve upon it for future BB tourists – still needs some cleaning up):

Using Ben’s Android smart phone, we navigated all over New Mexico’s largest metropolis to see the sites! Here’s a brief (seriously, we saw A LOT of sites) pictorial review of Breaking Bad’s Albuquerque. If you are as much of a super fan as I am, you will instantly recognize these locations and be able to remember the scenes, but I’ve included AMC screenshots for reference! I also need to apologize for the quality of some of the photos – I took a few out the car window (plus I don’t have the skills nor the means that cinematographer Michael Slovis has).

Where We Live

As I slowly but surely take you on a nice little house tour, I have finally come to showcase the most important room in the house. Yes, the one with the TV in it. The room I’m currently sitting in.

Since my house was built pre-flat screen tv wall mount era, we don’t share the same living room with the original owners of the house. Here’s what we’ve done with their living room, what I commonly refer to as simply “the front room”!

The new paint color is Gray Timberwolf by Behr. I’ve curated this room to be somewhat North Carolina themed, because it features several items I’ve collected over the years including:

My square brown chair is pretty crucial in making our home happy as it once belonged to my grandmother! When I was young and would visit her house, there was a giant Bugs Bunny always sitting in the chair to welcome my cousins and me. Probably sounds creepy now, but it was cool when the 3′ Bugs Bunny was taller than me. Keeping a piece like this chair around reminds me of this truly touching story I recently heard about how we connect to the memory and vitality of someone we’ve lost by holding onto some of their most treasured belongings. Living Room

This corner of the room we haven’t really figured out yet, obviously. The vintage record player has been in the family and was passed down to me recently. The Roomba is a more recent acquisition, but it fits in with our family just perfectly! It takes care of those “Quailford tumbleweeds” as Ben likes to refer to them.

The original owners spent their time in this sitting room, where they sat. And probably listened to Little Orphan Annie. At least that is the perception The Christmas Story has given me of what life was like in the 40s.

In 2013, we need a big clean wall with no silly windows, fireplaces, french doors or thresholds on which to mount our tv. This requirement lead us to the traditional dining room space, naturally. And I will admit, it is not totally off base since we occasionally eat dinner with Alex Trebek…a bad habit we are constantly trying to kick!

Now I will go on a tangent (like I haven’t already gone on about 17 other tangents in this post) and get on my soap box about cable television! A couple of years ago, when Ben and I moved in together, he suggested that we not subscribe to cable. I was devastated to have to sacrifice such luxuries as Sister Wives, Real Housewives, Full House reruns, and Toddlers & Tiaras (you know, quality television), in order to compromise on a pleasant coexistence. We agreed to cut the $100+ cable bill in exchange for a $7 Hulu Plus subscription and piggyback onto my parents’ Netflix account. Phew! I am so glad I gave into that compromise, what with the money we are saving each month. Unfortunately, my adoration for trashy tv hasn’t subsided because my latest addiction is watching Melrose Place reruns on Netflix. Sigh!

Anyway, back the house tour! Here’s our dining room turned living room transformation! There is one thing to note – as of last weekend, we swapped the light fixture in the front sitting room with the gold chandelier in the tv room.

We settled on Behr’s Beach Towel for this room! I’m very influenced by color names (think Essie nail polish) and this one especially caught my eye and ear!

Living Room

Here’s the story behind a few of the pieces you see here:

  • I work dangerously close to HomeGoods, so the orange table lamp, bike throw pillow and jute ottoman all hail from HomeGoods
  • We splurged on the Crate & Barrel couch – a must!
  • Have Pride In All You Do Canvas by Shelly Kennedy – this fun and funky canvas was a gift from my old coworkers at Rosenberry Rooms!
  • Colombian Wall Tapestry – this gem came from my parents’ house! They got it in Colombia some 20+ years ago, where I’m certain they predicted their future daughter would be painting a room Beach Towel Blue which is the ideal backdrop for this artpiece
  • Persian Rug – another family heirloom!
  • And below you will see a collection of vintage fashion magazine tear-outs

Living Room

Where we live! We definitely do a lot more sitting in the tv room than in the formal sitting room. That room is now more suitable for jumping rope, chasing dogs and hosting fancy parties. I’m sure we’re making the original owners very proud!
